CARDIFF, WALES

Launched on 6th April, Khandel light Cardiff has been formed by a group of students at the University of Cardiff as a separate committee to fundraise for the Charity. Many of these students have already visited Khandel, and one was in the party of Newport Free Grammar School pupils that visited Khandel in 1995 – the visit that first inspired Dr Gough to form Khandel light. These students are sufficiently motivated to want to make their own contribution to the Charity; they are hoping to make their own contribution to a specific programme to replace the straw and mud homes of ten of the very poorest families each year with brick constructions. Khandel light Cardiff got off to a fast start with their fundraising, with their now famous Cardiff Medics Rugby Club 2004 naked calendar!

  • Will Gough (Chairman)
Will is a 3rd year Dental Student at UWCM (University of Wales College of Medicine) and is from Chrishall near Cambridge. He was educated at Newport Free Grammar School in Essex with whom he visited India and Khandel in 1996. Will witnessed the issues facing Khandel before Khandel light was established and is keen to go back and see how the Charity has helped NSK achieve its aims. Will is a keen sportsman and represents Cardiff Meds RFC.

  • James Gough
James is a first year medic at UWCM and is from Chrishall near Cambridge. He was educated at Newport Free Grammar School in Essex and visited India in 2000 where he carried out some work experience at the prosthetics clinic in Jaipur. He also stayed in Khandel on his trip where he learnt a great deal first hand about the work of NSK and how Khandel light has contributed. James is a keen sportsman and represents Cardiff Meds RFC.

  • Laura Jackson
Laura is a 3rd year Medical Student and hails from the Hereford area. She was educated at Hereford Cathedral School and also has a degree in commerce from Birmingham University. She travelled to India in 1998 whilst on a gap year. Laura is a keen sports woman, having represented the British Universities running team whilst also being a keen climber, cyclist and snow boarder.

  • Andrew Gardiner
Andy is a 3rd year Dental Student at UWCM and is from Cardiff. He was educated at Whitchurch High School. Andy visited Khandel in 2003 while travelling around India, where Rameshwar Lal Verma and his team showed him around some of the work being carried out by NSK. He also carried out some voluntary dental work in Jaipur when the local dentist fell short staffed! Andy is a keen rugby player and represents the college.

  • Reena Patel
Reena was born in Toronto, Canada, and now lives in Surrey. She is a final year Dental Student at UWCM. Reena visited Khandel in 2003 whilst travelling around India with her sister and friends. She also has family and friends in the Gujarat region of India and so has a good understanding of the current issues affecting Khandel.

  • Imran Nathoo
Imran was born in Kenya and lived there for five years before moving back to England and now lives in Bristol. He is a 3rd year Dental Student at UWCM and keen sports man, squash being his forte. He is currently planning a trip to India during which he hopes to visit Khandel.

  • Aditya Manjunath
Adi was born in Preston but now lives in Mountain Ash in South Wales. He is a 4th year Medical Student at UWCM and represents the college at both rugby and cricket.
