Khandel light works by investing in long-term projects which aim
to secure the future of the region surrounding Khandel.
The Charity
wishes to continue to improve local infrastructure and education
and to be able to respond to any emergency that arises, as it has
to date, in particular, with the water shortages. It hopes to be
able to extend its remit beyond the 11 villages that it currently
supports.
The central issue in Khandel, and therefore the focus of Khandel light’s efforts, always comes back to water; for there can
never be good health without access to clean water. Thus, with
generous help from volunteers, it is currently investigating long-term
solutions to the water shortage issue, such as the construction
of very deep wells and desalination plants. If such solutions prove
feasible and are implemented, they clearly fundamentally improve
the viability of the community.
Khandel light operates a transparent and effective operation, in
which help is directed where it is most needed. There is no bureaucracy,
but rather a very close relationship with its target community.
Its committee hopes to have developed a model of community to community
support, operating from the bottom up that could be replicated
elsewhere – to support more communities in India, or indeed,
in other places. |
